We attach great importance to postgraduate training. All PhD and MPhil students must participate in the appropriate modules of the interdisciplinary Faculty Research Training Programme and we also offer a range of in-house training courses. These begin with an induction programme as you arrive in Newcastle and continue in collaboration with partners such as the Staff Development Unit, other schools and universities.
All postgraduate students are integrated into the School's research culture and encouraged to participate in the activities – internal and external seminars and lectures, workshops, conferences, for example – of our various research clusters. Students are also offered opportunities to develop their teaching skills and may have opportunities to become involved in other school research projects.
As part of the supervisory relationship, all students are encouraged to reflect on their skills to highlight areas where they may benefit from additional training and to keep track of the different forms of training they've undertaken. We hope that this process allows students to complete their programmes not only with a thesis they're proud of, but also a marketable set of skills for a wide range of future careers.
