Abstract: This article appeared in an introduction to comparative politics which is widely used as a reference in seminar reading lists. The second edition of this volume is currently in print. This article argues for a culturally oriented apporach to comparative politics and criticises universal and quantitaive approaches to comparative politic while suggesting a kind of synthesis between cultural hermeneutics and 'rational' theories.
