Professor Madeleine Murtagh

Background

Madeleine Murtagh is a newly appointed Professor in Sociology and Bioethics in the Centre for Policy, Ethics and Life Sciences. Madeleine began her academic career in Australia studying and teaching sociology, anthropology, public health and bioethics, moving to the UK in 2000. Her research began by examining how people interact with and make decisions about using new health treatments and technologies including ethnographic research, expanding to examining (and interfering in) practices of (open) data science in health (particularly in longitudinal cohort studies and biobanks). She conducts social studies of sociotechnical and normative practices in data sharing and data governance as well as taking part in the development of new governance and stakeholder engagement practices in the context of transdisciplinary research teams.
