My primary interests are in regional development of the 'advanced' economies and the social implications of economic change. Empirically, I have investigated these interests across a range of knowledge-based, high technology and service industries and I have a particular expertise on the UK (and world) motorsport industry. Theoretically, I am interested in conceptual models of new economic geographies incuding clusters, learning regions, networks and value chains, multicultural economic development and alternative economic geographies.
I have a broader interest in the role of (economic) geography and its relationship to public policy. This may be partly explained by my shared position as a Reader in Urban and Regional Studies in CURDS and as a Senior Consultant in Regeneration and Economic Development in an employee-owned public policy consultancy, GHK Consulting Ltd.
Currently, my research revolves around theorising, implementing and evaluating models of regional development including cluster development (Motorsport Valley for DTI/RDAs), City Growth Strategies (DTI), community development finance (DTI Phoenix Fund) and skills-driven regional development (Regional Skills Foresight, Skills Intelligence North East). I co-supervise a number of PhD students investigating a variety of these development models.
