Project:

The Development of Townscape as an Urban Design and Conservation Pedagogy: The Architectural Review and the work of Thomas Sharp

From July 2007 to September 2007
Project Leader(s): John Pendlebury
Sponsors: British Academy

Dr Erdem Erten of the Izmir Institute of Technology, Turkey, visited the School as a British Academy / ESRC Visiting Fellow. The principal purposes of his visit were to engage with the Sharp archive held by the University and the AHRC funded project then underway for its care and dissemination, to work with Newcastle scholars and to attend the conference hosted by the University as part of the Sharp project. His host in Newcastle was John Pendlebury.

Outputs from the project include the paper Erten, E. (2009). "Thomas Sharp's collaboration with H. de C. Hastings: the formulation of townscape as urban design pedagogy. "Planning Perspectives 24(1): 29-49.

Dr. Erten is co-editing with John Pendlebury the collection, Alternative Visions of Post-war Reconstruction: Creating the Modern Townscape, originally stimulated by the Sharp project conference.
