My research as an urban historian sits at the intersection of human geography, material culture and political science and I welcome applications from prospective doctoral students who are interested in modern urban and architectural history and visual culture.
I currently run the design studio in the first semester of the M Arch Programme. The module, thematically entitled "The Urban Fabric" focuses on the broader social, cultural, historical and political context within which architecture is practiced. The semester starts with a foreign city visit and all activities throughout the semester are anchored around this city to provide utmost immersion into the questions raised by the chosen city. The studio is dedicated to not only the design process, but is complemented with readings and seminar-style discussions, movie nights, an exhibition and a symposium with invited scholars, who specialize in some aspect of the city in question. The current destination of the studio is Berlin, with Istanbul to follow in 2013.
In addition to questions of urban design, I am interested in the early stages of design education and have taught extensively at this stage in Newcastle, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Middle East Technical University.
