Barkas, W.J. (1874), stated that "Ctenoptychius unilateralis was first described and figured by Mr. T. P. Barkas in the Geological Magazine for January, 1869". In fact, Barkas, T.P. (1869b) originally described and figured this specimen only as Ctenoptychius and did not identify the species. The first published account of Ctenoptychius unilateralis was given by Barkas, W.J. (1874).

NEWHM:G147.66 is the counterpart of this specimen. Pleurodus rankinei was originally cited by Agassiz (Poiss. Foss. Vol iii, p. 174) in 1843 (name only). Woodward (1889) subsequently cites this specimen, described and figured by Hancock & Atthey (1872a & d), as the Type, being "associated dental plates, and anterior portion of body with dorsal fin-spine; Museum of Newcastle upon Tyne", but proposes the replacement genus Pleuroplax nomen nov., and re-introduces the original spelling of rankinei by Agassiz.
