Acanthodopsis wardi Hancock and Atthey

Mandibular ramus

Shale above Low Main Seam
Westphalian B, CarboniferousCollected by Atthey, T.
Newsham Colliery, NorthumberlandPresented by Lady Armstrong, 1878

The species Acanthodes wardi was originally described by Egerton (1866, Quart. Jour. Geol. Soc., Vol. XXII, p. 470), but this species was referred to Hancock and Atthey's new genus Acanthodopsis, (Hancock and Atthey, 1868). "However, Hancock and Atthey's genus was based on an ischnacanthid with dentigerous jaw bones, while Egerton's wardi is an acanthodid without teeth. Thus Hancock and Atthey's wardi is distinct from that of Egerton" (Denison, 1979, p. 37). Designated Lectotype (Miles, 1966).

Barkas, T. P. (1873, p.83) stated that this specimen was derived from an insectiverous mammal although some of his contemporaries asserted that it was the mandible of Acanthodopsis. An associated label of unknown origin identifies the specimen as Primolestes carbonarius. The present identification was made by Boyd, M. J. (1986, personal communication).
