Pteroplax cornuta was originally described by Hancock and Atthey (1868) mainly from two cranial fragments (a larger and a smaller specimen), but also from numerous pre-maxillaries, mandibles, ribs, vertebrae and two sets of sternal plates. This specimen was figured without the associated ribs by Hancock and Atthey (1868). Designated Holotype (Romer, 1963). Re-described as Lectotype of Pteroplax cornutus Hancock & Atthey by Panchen (1970).

Pteroplax cornuta Hancock and Atthey, was originally described mainly from two cranial fragments (a larger and a smaller specimen), but also from numerous pre-maxillaries, mandibles, ribs, vertebrae and two sets of sternal plates. This specimen is the larger of the two cranial skull tables used by Hancock and Atthey (1868) in their type description (the smaller is NEWHM:G015.72), although it was not figured until 1877 (Atthey, 1877c). Watson (1926) used a number of specimens, including this one, to describe his new species Eogyrinus attheyi and noted that this specimen was one of the two types used by Hancock and Atthey (1868) to describe Pteroplax cornuta (the Lectotype of P.cornutus is now NEWHM:G015.72). Panchen (1970) considered that "more important specimens" used by Watson (1926) in his description of E.attheyi should be considered Paratypes (more correctly Paralectotypes). Attributed to the genus Anthracosaurus by Clack (1987a) where it was to be restricted to the species Anthracosaurus ruselli.

Originally described by Hancock and Atthey (1869a) as the type specimen of Urocordylus reticulatus. Referred to by Watson (1913) as the type specimen of Ceraterpeton reticulatum (Hancock & Atthey) and later by Steen (1938) as possibly representing a specimen of Keraterpeton galvani Huxley. Designated Holotype of Batrachiderpeton reticulatum (Hancock & Atthey) by Milner (1978), together with the counterpart NEWHM:G025.30.

An almost complete but crushed skull

Shale above Low Main Seam
Westphalian B, Carboniferous.Collected by Atthey, T.
Newsham Colliery, Northumberland.Presented by Lady Armstrong, 1878

Hancock and Atthey (1870c) in describing this specimen found it "necessary to establish a new genus for the reception of this curious species", which they named Batrachiderpeton lineatum. Hancock and Atthey (1870c) used this skull together with a less perfectly preserved one (NEWHM:G025.37) and a left mandibular ramus (NEWHM:G025.41) to describe their new species. Watson (1913) referred to this specimen as the type of Batrachiderpeton lineatum Hancock and Atthey, and cited it as Specimen I.
