Urban Sciences Building
The new home of our world leading School of Computing and a flagship for urban sustainability

Opened in September 2017, the £58million 12,500 sqm Urban Sciences Building (USB) is a flagship development. The building and its surrounding city area is a living laboratory underpinning research to make urban centres more sustainable for future generations.
As well as being home to the world Top 100 School of Computing, the building also includes a wide range of facilities funded though our role in the UK Collaboratorium for Research in Infrastruture and Cities (UKCRIC).
UKCRIC and other facilities in the building include:
- The National Green Infrastructure Facility (PDF), in collaboration with Northumbrian Water Group,
- The National Centre for Energy Systems Integration, investigating the challenges of energy supply, sustainability and affordability
- Smart Grid, the UK's largest Smart Grid project to look at how sources of power can be managed at a reasonable cost
- Decision Theatre, enabling advanced data visualisation so that policy makers and other stakeholders can plan and operate cities sustainably
- The Urban Observatory, the largest set of publicly available real time urban data in the UK
- EV Filling Station
