Welcome to the School of Historical Studies

We are a multi-disciplinary School and offer teaching and research in the subjects of:

• Archaeology
• Classics
• History
• History of Medicine

These areas share a common concern with how human societies, languages and cultures have developed over time. There are currently 41 members of the academic teaching staff, three post-doctoral research fellows, over 1000 undergraduates and more than 100 postgraduates making up our School.

Much of the School's research crosses traditional disciplinary frontiers. We are a partner in the following research centres:

• The Centre for Byzantine Cultural History
• the Wellcome Trust-supported Centre for the History of Medicine
• Centre for North-East England History and North East England History Institute .

The Head of School is Professor Tim Kirk. The School is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. We also welcome every opportunity to maintain contact with our alumni .
