Archaeology PhD

Choosing Newcastle

I chose to do a PhD at Newcastle University as I would like to continue into post-doctoral research. It will also better my employment opportunities and expand my area of expertise. I had previously studied my undergraduate and Masters degrees here at Newcastle. I love the department, and the staff are helpful and warm. It has a good reputation for postgraduate studies.

Before postgraduate study

Before starting my PhD, I did a MLitt at Newcastle University supervised by Dr Chris Fowler and Dr Jane Webster.

University facilities

The University has excellent postgraduate facilities. We have our own room containing hot desks and access to the staff kitchen. There are opportunities to do some undergraduate teaching and seminar work as well as helping out at field schools.

The Robinson Library contains a vast amount of archaeological texts, whilst the new Cowen Library in the Great North Museum will be a valuable resource. Access to free parking and photocopying make life easier.

The Students Union contains a wide variety of different cafes, bars and shops for general supplies. There is also a wide variety of clubs and societies that you can join.

Living in Newcastle

I live just outside the city on the metro line. I love the fact that it is only 10 minutes to the coast and 10 minutes to the city centre. The people who live in Newcastle are warm and friendly. I would like to continue into an academic career or possibly move into the commercial sector on completion of my PhD.
