Our areas of research range from the Eastern Mediterranean and sub-Saharan Africa to the archaeology of northern England. We focus on later prehistory, Greek and Roman archaeology, and the archaeology of historic periods.

Our outstanding facilities include a research suite for postgraduates with new computing facilities, and an archaeology laboratory built with support from the Wolfson Foundation. We also have close links with Newcastle’s Great North Museum: Hancock and its internationally important collection of Greek, Etruscan, Roman, and Romano-British artefacts. Our Cowen Library is housed in the new Library of the Great North Museum: Hancock.
