1st - 2nd April 2010
The British Abroad Conference 1-2 April 2010, Newcastle, UK
We are very pleased to announce that we have an international, interdisciplinary conference; more so, in fact, than we had ever hoped for. In addition to those based in the UK, we have speakers coming from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, UAE, and Greece. It promises to be highly stimulating both as an event, and as a subsequent publication.
The conference will be held in the Caledonian Hotel, Jesmond, just to the north of Newcastle’s city centre. The hotel will host all parallel and plenary sessions, lunches, tea breaks, conference dinner on the Thursday, and wine reception on the Friday. It also has 90 rooms available at a special conference rate. There are a number of other hotels very close by, ranging in price, as well as hostel accommodation. Newcastle has an international airport and mainline train station, and the hotel is about ten minutes’ walk from the nearest metro station.
We have received some financial support, but by no means as much as we wanted or indeed applied for, therefore the fees are higher than we would have liked, but we have tried to keep all costs as low as possible, and the fees are substantially lower than most comparable conferences. We are unable, very regrettably, to be able to offer graduate bursaries for this reason, but we have ensured that graduate students pay lower rates. We have not budgeted for, or expect to make, any profit, and in the absence of any other support are particularly grateful to the School of Historical Studies at Newcastle University for underwriting the conference. We would be enormously grateful if you would return the registration form and fees as soon as possible.
