This project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and assessment of the role of Aristotelianism in the development of medicine in antiquity. The project is concentrating on the following areas: (1) the reception, transformation and further development of medical knowledge in the works of Aristotle and the early Peripatetic school; (2) the reception of Aristotelian science and philosophy of science in Hellenistic and Galenic medicine; (3) the impact of developments in medicine after Aristotle (esp. in Alexandrian medicine and in Galen) on later Aristotelian thought and on the interpretation of Aristotle's biological, physiological and psychological writings in late antiquity.
