My research interests are in the cultural and political history of Italy and Europe in the twentieth century, particularly Fascism, anti-Fascism, emigration and the Second World War from the civilians' perspective.
From October 2007 to October 2010 I was involved in the AHRC funded project on 'Bombing, States and Peoples in Western Europe 1940-1945', investigating the impact of bombing on civilians in Britain, Germany, France and Italy. The project was based at the universities of Newcastle, Exeter and Reading. See the project website: www.centres.ex.ac.uk/wss/bombing/index.htm
During September-December 2012 I carried out research at the British School at Rome as Balsdon Fellow. I am currently working on a project on 'In Search of the White International: Catholic Communism between the Wars'.
I welcome proposals from postgraduates who are interested in any aspect of the political, cultural and social history of Italy in the 20th century, and on the impact of bombing in the Second World War in Europe.
