In the School of History, Classics and Archaeology, our postgraduate research students are eligible for £200 funding to attend relevant conferences.

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) - Doctoral Award Scheme

Newcastle is part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council Block Grant Partnership (BGP) and as part of this scheme we have funding for four PhD studentships.

The Doctoral Awards scheme provides studentships to enable students to undertake and complete a doctoral degree (PhD). Full and partial awards are available through this scheme (Home and EU students). A full award covers fees and an annual, tax free stipend of £13,590 (2011/12 rates). A partial award covers fees only. If you are a part time student, support is pro rata. For 2011 entry, we have 4 additional awards available for selected PhD projects in: archaeology; linguistics; Iberian and Latin American language and culture; translation and interpretation; English language and literature; fine art; museum, gallery and heritage studies; history; classics and ancient history; creative writing; film, digital and media production, music and political philosophy.

Masters Studentship in the History of Medicine

The Northern Centre for the History of Medicine at Newcastle University is pleased to advertise a Masters Studentship Award for postgraduate study in Newcastle University’s MA programme in the History of Medicine during the academic year 2012-13. The closing date for applications is 30 May 2012.

The studentship will be awarded at £6,500 for a full-time student of outstanding merit, including £5,500 towards fees (covering home/EU rates) and awarding £1,000 maintenance support. A part time studentship would be considered for a meritorious applicant at c. half the above rate per annum. The studentship will be available as of September 2012.

Successful applicants will join the postgraduate community based at the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University. Postgraduate teaching and research supervision in the History of Medicine at Newcastle is delivered by scholars with established international reputations in the field.

Other expenses

You may incur research expenses such as travel to other archives nationally, attendance at conferences to meet other postgraduates, etc. Discuss these at the earliest possible opportunity with either the Degree Programme Director, or your dissertation supervisor. You will be encouraged to seek external funding wherever possible. However, you have a specific requirement you may make an application in advance of the expenditure to the Head of School.

Some limited funding may be available at the discretion of the Head of School, upon production of necessary receipts, and demonstration that the expenditure is essential to your research project.
