Archaeology at Newcastle

Undergraduate study in Archaeology covers a wide range of topics from later prehistory to the modern world. As well as providing fascinating knowledge about how past communities lived, studying Archaeology involves a wide variety of teaching and learning activities including fieldwork and artefact studies. Archaeology students develop valuable data-analysis skills alongside their abilities to interpret information and communicate findings with others.

We are fortunate to have The Great North Museum: Hancock in Newcastle, home to the collections formerly at the Shefton Museum of Greek Art and Archaeology and the Museum of Antiquities. Newcastle and its region also has a wealth of archaeological sites including Hadrian's Wall.

Newcastle is one of the very few universities to teach not only Greek and Roman archaeology but also Late Antique and Byzantine archaeology as well as archaeology combined with history.

Archaeology teaching was highly commended by students in the 2010 National Student Survey.
