The Human Nutrition Research Centre holds an annual research day where members of the HNRC showcase their current research. This year's Research Day was held on Wednesday 10th October 2012 and was very well received, with attendees travelling from outside the region as well as strong representation from Newcastle and Nothumbria Universities.
The Research Day covered areas including Molecular Nutrition, Public Health and Applied Nutrition and included a poster competition with prizes worth £100 and a tour of our brand new NUFood facilities.
HNRC Research Day and Annual Lecture 2012 Programme
The three finalists of this year's poster competition were chosen by our external judges, Dr. Heather Finlayson (Head of School of Biology, Newcastle University), Dr. Blossom Stephan (IHS Lecturer, Newcastle University) and Dr. John Lodge (Head of Food and Nutrition Research Group, Northumbria University). The three finalists then presented their posters at the Research Day and the overall winner decided by the audience using an electronic voting system.
This year's poster competition was won by Rachel Tyrrell with her poster 'Identifying the Visited Food Environment (VFE) of young adults: a pilot study' (click to see poster). The two runner's up were Suzanne Escolme with 'Do Resveratrol and Sirtuin 1 act independently or through a common pathway to influence DNA methylation and expression of genes involved in ageing' and Fiona Malcomson with 'WNT gene expression in the macroscopically normal epithelium of people at differential risk of colorectal cancer'.
This yearly event culminated with the Annual Lecture given by Professor Tim Lang (Professor of Food Policy, Centre for Food Policy, City University, London) on 'Food democracy and societal renewal: is this top down or bottom up?' as part of Newcastle University's Societal Challenge Theme Social Renewal. If you are a Newcastle University student you may access the slides from this lecture on the VRE or by emailing hnrc-pa@ncl.ac.uk.
