Pay Structure
A pay structure provides a framework within which an organisation defines the different levels of pay for jobs or groups of jobs.
The basis of the pay structure for Newcastle University is the pay spine which is a nationally negotiated 51 point spine. It consists of 51 points extending from the lowest to the highest paid jobs covered by the structure to which Newcastle University has added points. Pay ranges for the different job grades are then superimposed onto the spine.
Whilst the 51 point spine is nationally negotiated the grade structure is developed locally, the grade structure for Newcastle University has been developed to meet the following aims;
- To design a logical framework within which equitable, fair and consistent reward policies can be implemented.
- To replace the current over-complex and inappropriate grade and pay structures.
- To ensure that the University pay structure is developed in line with the National Framework Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding whilst meeting the needs of the University.
- To design a pay structure that increases flexibility and reduces job demarcation.
- To provide pay structures that enable harmonisation of terms and conditions for employees of similar job size.
- To develop a pay structure that is both affordable now and in the longer term to ensure that the University can meet its Business Plan.
- To ensure that there is scope to reward employees making an exceptional contribution.
- To design a structure that provides a competitive platform to recruit and retain excellent employees.
- To provide a logical and clear structure that can be communicated to employees.
It is important to remember that pay modernisation consists of a number of steps.
