You are invited to attend the Academic Ageing Seminar on Thursday 26 November 2009 in the Wolfson Seminar Room, Institute for Ageing and Health. The seminar will take place at 12.30 pm with sandwiches available from 12 noon.

The speaker is Professor Edwin Pugh, Consultant in Palliative Care, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and the title of the seminar is 'A Holistic View of Current End of Life Issues - The Status Quo is not an Option'. A brief abstract is below.

All welcome.

Abstract:

This presentation will take a holistic view of end of life care through the eyes of Professor Edwin Pugh, Chairman of the Regional Clinical Innovation Team for End of Life Care and Chairman of the Regional Advisory Group for ‘A Good Death’.

The clinical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of end of life care will be explored, both current and proposed. With the dramatic projected increase in numbers and proportion of older people, the current NHS and Local Authority service model for providing end of life care is challenged.

End of life care and achieving a good death are seen as a major public health issue.  In particular the need for a public health approach to create compassionate communities and change public attitudes is highlighted.

It is hoped the presentation will provoke discussion and debate as current statutory agency practice and ethos is challenged. How do we get rid of the taboo of death in our society? How can we have more people dying at home if that is their choice? What is the role, if any, of individuals and their wider community? Professor Pugh will explore why the status quo is not an option.
