A brief abstract is below.

All welcome.

Abstract:

Insomnia, the most frequently reported psychological symptom in Britain, significantly impairs personal functioning, degrades quality of life, delays recovery from acute illness episodes, and is an independent risk factor for major depression.

The prevalence of insomnia is also strongly age related, increasing steadily from early adulthood, and affecting 20-25% of people over 65. Yet insomnia remains poorly understood and ineffectively managed within most healthcare systems.

Using recently completed epidemiological and experimental analyses this presentation examines the origins and natural history of sleep disturbance in later life.

In addition to informing the clinical management of sleep disorders among older people, the results emphasise the value of a lifecourse perspective in understanding later life phenomena.
