Location: Great Gable Meeting Room, Clinical Ageing Research Unit, CAV
Time/Date: 2nd February 2012, 12:15 - 13:00

You are invited to the IAH research seminar which will take place on Thursday 2 February 2012 which will be held in the Great Gable meeting room of the Clinical Ageing Research Unit. The meeting will start at 12.15 and will be followed at approximately 13.00 by a sandwich lunch.

The presentation today will be given by Dr Jo Jefferis, NIHR Research Fellow in the Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre and the title of her talk is 'The relationship between vision impairment and cognitive impairment in older people'.

Abstract:

Eye disease and visual symptoms are desperately common amongst older people, with ophthalmology outpatient appointments representing 20% of all outpatient appointments for over 80 year olds in the NHS in 2010/11.  Cognitive decline is also a problem which can have a profound effect on the lives of older people and their families.  A number of questions arise out of this:

  1. How do cognitive decline and vision influence each other?
  2. Are neurodegenerative eye diseases associated with neurodegenerative brain diseases?
  3. Does vision influence the way that older people perform on cognitive tasks?
  4. Are visual symptoms more common for people who suffer from dementia?
  5. Does cognitive impairment influence visual functioning and quality of life?

Using data from the Newcastle 85+ study, local dementia cohorts and the Cataract and Cognition study we will explore this complex relationship between vision and cognition.
