As part of the Newcastle Science City (NSC) initiative, the Business and Engagement Quarter is intended to bring the business and volunteer sector and the public into much closer contact with research. As such, the Campus is the home of the NSC Ageing and Health theme. Working with the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and other partners, our vision is to generate synergistic projects which will attract additional business activity to the Campus.
Many opportunities and projects are currently currently under consideration or development, including:
Working with Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle Nutrition, we hope to establish a centre which will support research and education relating to life-long nutrition and access to food to support vitality and independence. This will involve researchers from the Institute for Ageing and Health’s Nutrition and Oral Health theme, Human Nutrition Research Centre and the School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and appropriate partners from the food industry. The Centre will also provide an outstanding opportunity for public understanding of and involvement with food and public health research.
Envisioned as a focus for the activities of the many partners involved in the Institute’s Technology for an Ageing Society theme, this Centre is intended to provide opportunities for businesses to engage with research and the public in the design of technologies to support healthy ageing and life-long independence. It is also envisioned that the Centre would provide a showcase for future technology and facilities for demonstration, trials, testing, selection and matching to individuals’ needs.
Working with Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Northumbria University, other Trusts, social care providers and a private care provider, we aspire to bring to Newcastle a world-class facility for teaching and innovation in care provision for older people. Such a facility would be an international exemplar and provide essential support to continuing improvement of both institutional and home based care for people with dementia and cognitive decline.
There is a requirement for a facility from which to deliver teaching and training programmes for the University and other occupants of other Campus. The opportunity exists to combine this with the need for new bases for some volunteer sector organizations involved with ageing, with the IAH’s public engagement programme and with research projects involving significant public participation. This would need a substantial facility, providing excellent opportunities for combined programmes of activity and use of the facility to support local community activities.
