From Workhouse to World Class Research Institute :
History of the Newcastle General Hospital site

Development of the hospital

The two plans below show the development of the site between 1902 (top) and 1936 (centre). The original workhouse buildings are visible in the bottom right corner of both plans, with the 1870 hospital buildings to the left. On the 1936 plan, the shaded areas indicate proposed new buildings or buildings under construction.

The photograph below shows Newcastle General Hospital in 1966 when it was one of the three Newcastle district general hospitals. The layout of the hospital in the photograph is recognisably the same as in the 1936 plan.
