Wellcome Trust Centre for Mitochondrial Research
In January 2012 the Wellcome Trust announced the establishment of a new Centre for Mitochondrial Research at Newcastle University. This Wellcome Trust Centre aims to make a major difference to the lives of patients with disease caused by mitochondrial dysfunction. We will achieve this by integrating international quality research with training excellent young scientists and engaging with policy makers, our patients and the public.
There are four main research themes that are designed to synergistically develop both basic and clinical science:
- Mitochondrial gene expression
- Development of IVF based techniques to prevent mitochondrial disease
- The neurology of mitochondrial disease
- The role of mitochondrial DNA in common complex diseases
