I am a clinician scientist who has held a chair of Hepatology since 1994 and practiced as a consultant hepatologist [clinical lead in viral hepatitis] since 1986. I was instrumental in setting up the Newcastle liver transplant unit which opened in 1993 and was it’s medical director for the first 3 years; the unit has now performed >600 transplants. Over the last decade the focus of my research group has been viral hepatitis, in particular hepatitis C virus infection, supported by grant funding from the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council
