An application for admission as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy will normally be approved conditionally. During the first year assessment (at about nine months) a substantial piece of work is submitted for assessment. Students are also interviewed about their work to date and plans for the future. Following satisfactory progress the student is formally upgraded to full PhD programme.
PhD is awarded following a minimum of three years full time original research, successful submission of a written thesis and satisfactory oral examination. Students are expected to submit a thesis within 12 months of the end of the programme.
There are an increasing number of programmes, such as the MRC Integrated MRes/PhD Studentship four year scheme, which incorporate a number of taught modules into the programme during the first year.
Although we do operate a rolling admission process, there are certain advantages to enrolling in September (eg certain Graduate School/ICM events are geared to this).
Candidate should ideally have a first class or at least a good upper second class degree (2:1). In addition, overseas candidates must provide evidence that they have gained an IELTS 6.5 or equivalent for PhD.
Informal enquiries from UK, EU and international students for PhD places within the Institute should be directed in the first instance to Dr Simi Ali, our Postgraduate Research Co-ordinator (simi.ali@ncl.ac).
