Diabetes

Patient taking part in diabetes researchThe focus of our research is to try to understand how diabetes and its complications develop, and explore ways to treat and manage diabetes. Our group comprises scientists from different but complimentary backgrounds, and includes laboratory based scientists, clinician scientists who provide paediatric and adult diabetes clinical services, and scientists involved in public health and diabetes prevention. This structure provides the ideal opportunity to translate our research into clinical practice to benefit our patients.

Our research covers three key areas:

  • exploring new treatments for diabetes, with a particular emphasis on agents that help the immune system and cell based therapies in the forms of islet and pancreas transplantation.
  • aiming to understand the metabolic problems in diabetes as a means of developing new therapies.
  • seeking to understand how diabetes and its complications develop, with a particular focus on the role of genes and lifestyle.

We work closely with diabetes charities (including Diabetes UK, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation) and the Diabetes Research Network (sponsored by the Dept of Health) to present and explain our research to other health care professionals and to the public.
