Stratified Medicine, Biomarkers & Therapeutics

Stratified Medicine, Biomarkers and Therapeutics

Overview

Our research seeks to help clinicians and patients to make more informed decisions about courses of treatment and disease management, while improving patient outcomes and safety.

This theme integrates:

  • clinical phenotyping
  • imaging
  • biomarker development
  • pharmacogenetics
  • the development of diagnostic tests applicable to clinical practice

Our membership consists of researchers from a variety of scientific backgrounds, clinical and non-clinical. They have the ultimate aim of developing personalised medicine and therapeutics

Our overarching goal is to gain a better understanding of disease pathophysiology. This includes disease endotypes.

We also seek to understand mechanisms accounting for therapeutic efficacy and adverse events. This includes drug endotypes.

By definition this theme is cross-cutting and involves researchers from a range of specialties.

Research interest

Our specific areas of research interest are:

Stratified medicine initiatives

ICM leads and works with several Medical Research Council-funded stratified medicine initiatives. The focus is on:

Development of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers

These include:

Therapeutics, pharmacogenetics and development of novel drugs

For more information on this research interest, visit the website.

There is also a research programme on atopic eczema.

Imaging - specifically magnetic resonance imaging

This includes:

  • magnetic resonance physics development of accelerated MRI scanning technologies
  • advanced, quantitative non-proton imaging, including lung function by 19F gas imaging and tissue energetics by 31P
  • diffusion imaging methodologies to assess to muscle microstructure
  • quantitative MRI as outcome measures in clinical trials

Details of our full portfolio of imaging facilities and research can be found at the Centre for In Vivo Imaging and Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre websites.

Medical toxicology and the effects of environmental stress on homeostasis and disease

Dermatological sciences

Our researchers look at developing personalised medicine and therapeutics.
Our stratified team try to develop specific treatments for individual patients rather than using broad treatments across patient groups.
