Welcome to the Institute of Genetic Medicine

The Institute of Genetic Medicine (IGM) is one of seven Newcastle University research institutes within the Faculty of Medical Sciences and Newcastle Biomedicine.  Major University investment has underpinned the rapid recent expansion of the IGM research portfolio, which is focussed on delivering high-quality outputs of major biological and clinical significance.

Established as the Institute of Human Genetics in 2001, the Institute was renamed in 2011 to reflect the increased emphasis on world-leading translational research carried out within six research themes spanning clinical medicine. In recently developed state-of-the-art laboratories, the 38 Principle Investigators, including 16 professors and over 150 staff share a common aim:

To harness genetic, developmental and cell biology to understand and treat human disease by developing and implementing new therapies.
