Both embryos and stem cells promise a precious cell source for the understanding of early human development and treatment of various degenerative diseases. Therefore this lecture will address our present knowledge but also lack of understanding surrounding the basic biology of early human embryos and stem cells which continues to challenge successful medical and other applications of these cells.
