Danielle Crompton:
MSc in Medical Genetics (2006) – now a Trainee Clinical Molecular Geneticist
at Birmingham Women’s Hospital
I chose to do the MSc in Medical Genetics at Newcastle University as I like the structure of the course as half the year is spent attending lectures, essay writing and problem solving and the next 6 months are spent on a research project. The first half of the course allowed me to increase my knowledge and understanding of genetics through teaching, writing and reading and the second half gave me great experience in the lab and was very challenging. One of the great advantages of the course was that I got to do a research project in the NHS diagnostic lab which gave me an insight into how such a lab operates and helped me in making decisions about my plans for the future.
Studying in Newcastle was great fun, it’s a very lively city with plenty going on. The people are extremely friendly and the city has a great atmosphere.
I am now a trainee clinical molecular geneticist at Birmingham
Women’s hospital. I feel the MSc course was great preparation for my job
and that my time spent in the diagnostic lab at Newcastle doing my research
project helped me get where I am today.
