Functional Genetics

Technical Manager: Paul Cairns

This is a Comparative Biology Centre facility located in the Institute of Genetic Medicine. The modelling of genetic defects in in vivo systems is an essential step towards understanding developmental processes and the pathogenesis of human disease. Led by Drs Heiko Peters and Colin Miles the facility generates transgenic and gene knockout mice to provide researchers at the Institute with model systems for gene function analyses. Based on Leica DMIRE2 and DMIRB microscopes, two state-of-the-art microinjection units are available for pronucleus and blastocyst injections. Dedicated ES cell and organ culture facilities, and high quality stereomicroscopes for phenotype analysis are affiliated to this unit.
