The Institute of Health & Society contributes significantly to Newcastle University's mission of Transforming Health. Our vision is to transform the health of individuals and populations through pioneering translational research and education in public health, health services research and health-related social science.
Our research is organised in four overarching themes: unravelling the origins of disease across society; understanding health experiences across the life-course; developing and evaluating interventions to improve health and well-being; and supporting health decision-making and the effective organisation of health care. These themes provide a coherent narrative for our research from the elucidation of health problems to evidence-based intervention for health and health care improvement.
IHS delivers both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the Faculty of Medical Sciences and we provide professional education in public health and primary care. We also have a vibrant community of students pursuing postgraduate research, many via prestigious fellowships which we actively support.
IHS is also the hub for Fuse, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health funded via the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC). This Public Health Research Centre of Excellence brings together the five North East universities with Practice and Policy partners from across the North East of England.
IHS also hosts the Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit and Research Design Service.
Although IHS formed in 2006, it moved to the Baddiley-Clark Building in March 2010. The building was formally opened by the University Chancellor, Professor Sir Liam Donaldson in April 2011.
