Funders

The Institute’s main research funder is the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), a government body dedicated to creating a health research system in which the NHS supports outstanding individuals, working in world class facilities and conducting leading edge research focused on the needs of patients and the public.

The Institute has also been extremely successful in winning numerous prestigious fellowships from this source. Our Research Council funding covers a wide range of panels including the Medical Research Council, Economic and Social Research Council, Natural Environment Research Council and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

We are also supported by many charities including the Health Foundation, Arthritis Care UK, Diabetes UK, Alcohol Research UK and the North East Cancer Children’s Research Fund amongst others and have several funding awards from the European Commission and other international bodies.

The total value of our research awards in 2010 -2011 was approximately £6 million.
