I trained as a registered general nurse working for 14 years in the NHS gaining expertise in surgical, accident & emergency and occupational health nursing. After completing a BSc (Hons) in Health Development Studies, I started my career in health research. My initial work involved both quantitative and qualitative methods to understand the impact of speech and voice problems in people with Parkinson's disease and to evaluate speech and language therapy services for people with Parkinson's disease. My research interests are focused on health care improvements and health promotion for older people, in particular aiming to reduce health inequalities.

I am currently working as a research associate on a project funded by Macmillan Cancer Support. This is a longitudinal study to evaluate a welfare rights service set up in County Durham for people affected by cancer and their carers. The project aims to examine the impact of welfare rights advice for people with cancer and their carers and to examine the perspectives of professionals involved in their care.
