Research Interests

My main research interest is in understanding the determinants of metabolic abnormalities associated with obesity.

Other Expertise

My other research interests include:

• Assessing the public health importance of diabetes, obesity and related conditions in economically and socially disadvantaged populations

• Evaluating measures for the prevention of diabetes, obesity and related conditions, particularly in economically and socially disadvantaged populations.

Current Work

I am currently working on a project that aims to increase our understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the link between obesity and cardiovascular disease. We have examined a sample of obese women who have none of the abnormalities usually associated with obesity (abnormal glucose, lipids or blood pressure) and are comparing them with a sample of obese women who do have a glucose, lipid or blood pressure abnormality on a range of measures including bodyfat distribution, physical activity levels and diet.

Future Research

I am keen to persue my work around obesity and metabolic syndrome and to remain involved in diabetes and cardiovascular disease epidemiology and management in low and middle income countries.
