The Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit Research Programme is led by Professor Elaine McColl. As well as its position in the Institute of Health and Society, the NCTU is a component part of the Clinical Research Centre. The remit of the Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit (NCTU) is the design, conduct and analysis of a broad spectrum of clinical and complex trials of health, social and educational interventions. As well as trials of all types of health and social technologies (pharmacological, surgical, screening, behavioural, social and service-level interventions), the NCTU also supports intervention trials aimed at improving clinical and service effectiveness through professional behaviour change.
Our work is both proactive and reactive to the needs of the NHS and other service providers. We work collaboratively with clinicians and other professionals in the Newcastle University, in other universities and in health and social care trusts.
We support investigators in study design and the preparation of trial grant applications to prestige funding bodies, in the ongoing management of trials and in analysing and reporting study findings. We also support studies preparing for definitive trials, including systematic reviews, instrument development and trial platforms. In addition, we conduct and support quantitative and qualitative research into the design and conduct of trials and the assessment of patient-reported outcomes. In collaboration with the Clinical Research Centre, we provide high quality training in trial-related issues.
The services and support we can provide to investigators include advice and assistance with: proposal preparation for grant applications; trial design; protocol development; regulatory & ethical submissions; randomisation; trial management; trial monitoring; data management; data analysis and interpretation; pharmacovigilance. We encourage investigators to make contact early in the process of proposal development! Please direct initial enquiries by e-mail to the NCTU secretary: Lavinia Miceli. A member of the NCTU team will then contact you to discuss your needs.
