Epidemiology

Epidemiology and public health research in the Institute of Health & Society has developed significantly over the past 10 years. Epidemiology and public health research in the Institute have made major contribution of national and international importance, in areas such as: understanding the factors underlying trends in coronary heart disease mortality in the UK, USA and China; defining the relationship between exposure to pollution from open cast coal mining and children’s health; undertaken definitive work on paternal pre-conception radiation exposure and childhood cancers and added to our understanding of the life course determinants of adult disease through the ongoing study of the Newcastle 1947 birth cohort, the Newcastle Thousand Families Study.

Significant contributions to national and international scientific communities have been made through participating on committees informing policy and practice at national and international levels; editorial responsibilities and invited presentations at major scientific meetings.
