In addition to being part of the Institute of Health & Society, Public Health Nutrition Research is also one of the three research themes within the Human Nutrition Research Centre, which is now an established University Research Centre directed by Professor John Mathers.
In Public Health Nutrition research seeks to understand the complex relationships between the food environment, food choice, nutrient intake, physical activity, individual and socio demographic characteristics and health outcomes. The group’s research spans across the lifecourse from the youngest young to the oldest old but has a particular focus on children, families and young people. Obesity in children and young people is an urgent public health challenge, much of the group’s work aims to elucidate the causal pathways contributing to the obesity epidemic and to develop and test interventions and/or public health policies designed to improve food choice and/or increase physical activity.
This work is underpinned by a strong methodological theme which includes development of tools to measure individual behaviours particularly improving dietary assessment methods for use with children and older people.
