Effective Professional Practice and Organisation of Care

The Effective Professional Practice and Organisation of Care Research Programme is led by Professor Martin Eccles

The overall aim of the programme is to improve patient outcomes through the receipt of appropriate healthcare. It does through this by research of relevance to both healthcare professionals and policy makers and includes the study of influences on healthcare professional and organisational behaviour.

The programme covers four areas of study:

  1. Systematic reviewing of the currently available knowledge, including developing clinical guidelines; the programme director is an editor for the Cochrane Collaboration Effective Practice and Organisation of Care Review Group.
  2. Hypothesis generating studies, usually documenting current patterns of care.
  3. Hypothesis testing studies, usually randomised controlled trials of interventions to promote the uptake of research evidence into practice. As well as providing overall estimates of effect these usually incorporate integrated process evaluations that illuminate the causal mechanisms of a trial's effects.
  4. An exploration of theory relevant to this area, in order to better understand clinician behaviour and design interventions to promote change.

The programme also hosts a BMC open access journal – Implementation Science.
