Economics of Safety, Health, Environment and Risk (ESHER) nubs

The Economics of Safety, Health, Environment and Risk (ESHER) research group was set up on the formation of the Institute of Health & Society in 2006.  ESHER brings together world leading research in health economics and economics of safety and environment.  ESHER is co-led by Professor Luke Vale, Health Foundation Chair in Health Economics and Professor Sue Chilton. The Health Foundation Chair was created in 2002 and was held until 2010 by Cam Donaldson.  The post is cross-appointed to Newcastle University Business School where international leaders on economics of the environment and safety, Professors Michael Jones-Lee and Sue Chilton, are based at the Newcastle University Business School.

ESHER's major areas of research are:

  • valuing benefits/quantifying preferences in health, safety and environment;
  • development and application of economic evaluation;
  • priority setting in health care;
  • econometric applications in studies of health, safety and the environment (especially income and health inequalities).

The programme has captured several million pounds of research funds from competitive Research Council, Government Department and European sources.
