A mapping study and strategy document
The aim of this project was to map current capacity and capability to undertake HIA in the North East region and write a strategy for development. The North East Public Health Observatory (NEPHO) commissioned the Public Health Research Group at the University of Newcastle to undertake the project. This started in August 2005 and lasted until December 2005. We identified three guiding principles of the strategy to build capacity and capability for HIA in the North East Region. These are:

- Local ownership.
- Integration of HIA with other existing assessment tools and structures.
- Adaptability to suit the context of HIA implementation in the region.
We identified two components of the overall strategy for HIA development in the region. These consist of a training strategy for building capacity in HIA and a strategy for developing capability in HIA.
