Public Health Improvement

Overview

Public Health Improvement (PHI) is a multidisciplinary research theme that brings together health, social and behavioural science and professional expertise.

We conduct applied health research with a focus on the development, evaluation and translation of health interventions, as well as on related theory and methods.

Our research is built around five broad programmes:

  • understanding and tackling health inequalities
  • understanding and changing health related behaviours
  • evaluation of public health policy
  • public health nutrition
  • prevention of alcohol misuse

National partnerships

There is considerable overlap and inter-disciplinary working between these programmes. Members of the theme collaborate on research internationally and are also members of the following national partnerships.

Public Health Research Consortium

The Public Health Research Consortium (PHRC) brings together senior researchers from 11 UK institutions in a new integrated programme of research, with the aim of strengthening the evidence base for interventions to improve health, with a strong emphasis on tackling socioeconomic inequalities in health.

Fuse, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health

Fuse, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health is one of five UKCRC Public Health Research Centres of Excellence. A ‘virtual’ research centre, with staff and students based at the five North East universities, Fuse works in partnership with the public and in collaboration with the NHS, local and regional government and other public, private and voluntary organisations in North East England.

School for Public Health Research

The new National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) School for Public Health Research was launched in 2012. It has a budget of £20 million over five years to undertake research into public health, with an emphasis on what works practically, can be applied across the country and better meets the needs of policy makers, practitioners and the public.

Research training

We provide research training for postgraduate students at master’s and doctoral levels, and offer research training attachments for public health trainees and other professional groups by special arrangement. If you share our passion for excellence in public health and health intervention research, find out more about our research by following the links on this page or contact Sue Bell to find out how you can work with us.
