Connections with Brazil

Academic links

A wide range of research activity is currently underway in collaboration with Brazilian partners. This draws upon our world-leading expertise in the fields of:

  • ageing and health
  • urban (innovative cities)
  • natural environments
  • social renewal

Our particular strengths are in water and water remediation, mining and global sustainability. The School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, in particular, has many links and connections in Brazil through the WATERLAT network.

Several top academics in Brazilian universities are graduates from Newcastle University. We also have a number of academics and researchers at Newcastle with experience of working in Brazil or who are Brazilian in origin.

Social and cultural events

Since its inception in 2006 the Vamos Festival has celebrated Portuguese and Spanish speaking cultures in Newcastle. It offers a vibrant and diverse programme of 200+ events; combining food, art, film, theatre, dance, music, parties, fashion, sport, education and a carnival.

Staff and student exchange

Newcastle is a member of the Santander Global Universities Network which supports universities to study and carry out research in Latin America. Among other activities, the collaboration provides funds to members of the Newcastle University community who wish to visit Brazil and experience the rich, vibrant and diverse culture.

The School of Computing Science is working in collaboration with the Pontifícia Universidade do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) via the Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES). The project will run for four years and involves 55 months of exchanges of professors, post-docs and PhD students.
