These rankings reflect the world-class teaching and research across all of our three faculties.
Research and teaching excellence
We are a research-intensive university and have a global reputation for research excellence. We are committed to research which has a significant impact on global society.
We have a long tradition of excellence in teaching, recognised in many external surveys and assessments, but also by our own students. We have been awarded Gold status in the UK Teaching Excellence Framework, which recognises our undergraduate teaching as being of the highest quality in the UK.
We'e recently been ranked 175th in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2017-2018, this is up from our position of 190th in 2016. We scored particularly highly in the research and international outlook components of the survey.
Our international students rate us highly, and we had an overall satisfaction ranking of 94% in the International Student Barometer Survey, Autumn 2016. The results place us top 20 in the world and top 5 in the UK (among participating institutions).
We have an overall satisfaction level of 94% for our international students studying pathway and foundation courses at our INTO centre on campus. This is the highest level of all INTO’s 8 centres in the UK.

We are ranked 8th in the UK in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2017, placing us in the top 10 in the UK for the third year in a row. International students studying with us also give us a high rating of 93% for safety (International Student Barometer Autumn 2016).
