English Language Requirements

English language requirements for study purposes

You need a good level of English language to study at Newcastle. Applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide a recognised English language test or qualification.

Details of the English language requirements for each of our programmes can be found in the entry requirements section of each course listing in our undergraduate and postgraduate prospectuses.

We usually require a test score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, although some courses will accept 6.0 or equivalent and others require 7.0 or 7.5 or equivalent. We usually require this to have been taken within the preceding two to three years.

Include a copy of your IELTS test certificate or equivalent when you apply or send it as soon as you receive it. We accept photocopies, faxes and scanned versions of all documentation. If an original certificate is required, you will be asked for this.

English language tests and qualifications

We accept a range of English language tests and qualifications for study purposes, in addition to IELTS. Read our full list (PDF: 269KB), including their validity periods.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, please ensure you meet the English language requirements for visa purposes described below.

English language requirements for Tier 4 student visa applicants

All applicants requiring a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) for degree level study are now required to demonstrate they are competent in English language at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at level B2 or above. You are therefore required to hold a minimum of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) in all sub skills (listening, writing, reading and speaking).
