You need a good level of English language to study at Newcastle. Applicants whose first language is not English require a recognised English language qualification. The test should have been taken within the preceding two years.
We prefer the IELTS test, but the Pearson’s PTE Academic is also acceptable. As a guideline we usually require at least IELTS score 6.5 or equivalent, although some courses will accept 6.0 or equivalent and some require 7.0 or 7.5 or equivalent.
Applicants whose IELTS score is between 6.0 and 6.5, or equivalent, at the time of application will usually be expected to complete a pre-sessional course at our INTO Newcastle University Centre before their study programme begin.

We also recognise the English language standard achieved through qualifications such as:
• European Baccalaureate
• International Baccalaureate
• School Leaving Certificates such as the Vitnemal (Norway) and similar qualifications from other Scandinavian countries
Further details about the University's English language requirements can be found in our English Language Policy (PDF: 442KB).

Include a copy of your IETLS test certificate (or equivalent) when you apply. We accept photocopies, faxes and scanned versions of all documentation. If an original certificate is required, you will be asked for this.
All applicants requiring a CAS for degree level study are now required to demonstrate they are competent in English language at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) B2 or above. You are therefore required to hold a minimum of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) in all sub skills (listening, writing, reading and speaking).
At the current time, we will not accept ETS TOEFL IBT for applicants who require a Tier 4 visa for entry in 2015.
