*Semester 1(fall semester) ONLY
Newcastle has a strong tradition of welcoming Pre-Med students from the US onto its specifically developed Pre-Med study abroad programme. Study Abroad within the School of Biomedical Sciences offers a range programmes to fit many needs: those who want to focus on ‘medical’ knowledge and those who want to approach their time overseas in a broader sense.
The research done by our academics and in partnership with Newcastle Biomedicine Research Institutes allows us to deliver high quality teaching programmes. Research in Newcastle Biomedicine is of international standard, and was 7th in the UK for medical research (RAE2008: all 'medical' units of assessment combined).
A typical year/semester combines coursework in pre-med areas (Human Anatomy, Clinical Cases in Neuroscience) with skill-building courses such as the ‘Clinical Skills’ module as well as the opportunity to shadow doctors. For students who are interested in understanding the UK and other health care systems, the module ‘Healthcare organisation and practice’ could be of interest: The module is designed to provide an overview of healthcare and emphasises the interplay between science, society and individuals. Key features of current and future trends in healthcare practice and delivery are identified, described and applied through worked examples to develop students' understanding of the various contexts of health care practice nationally and internationally.
And spending a year provides the opportunity to branch out beyond the ‘narrow’ medical field and take modules in other subject areas.

Students may study any of the modules offered by the School of Biomedical Sciences. These include modules specifically designed for our pre-Med students including a Clinical Skills* module and Clinical Cases in Neuroscience*. The latter is taught jointly with our full time medical students. Also of particular interest to Pre-Med students is the Human Anatomy* module. Please go to Academics for details.
*Please note: these modules are only taught in semester 1 (fall semester) and are open to students coming for semester 1 or the full academic year.
Besides the academic part, it is the Practical components that will open you to new experiences and distinguish you from other Med School Applicants: be it shadowing doctors or volunteering. Students will also be offered the opportunity to experience health care in a UK setting through a one-week placement shadowing consultant medical staff at one of our local teaching hospitals. Please read details under Practicals.
Students may also choose to study other modules offered in the University, including physics modules specifically designed for American students preparing for the MCAT. Pre-dental students can also be accommodated on this programme and undertake a placement shadowing a dental surgeon in Newcastle Dental School.
