Work Experience

If you are aged 16-18 and interested in applying for a work experience placement at the Institute of Neuroscience, please refer to the information below. If you are over 18 and looking for some research experience, please refer to our internship page.

The Institute of Neuroscience can normally host up to three work experience placements per academic year, subject to the availability of our academic staff. There are no set dates for placements and they typically last for one week.

We receive many enquiries and cannot offer everyone a place, so if you are thinking of applying, please make sure you send us as much of the following information as possible:

  • Relevant forms or paperwork from your school indicating what they expect from a work experience placement and what information they require from us
  • A contact or reference from your school
  • A short personal statement including:
    • Information about yourself and your experience to-date
    • What interests you about neuroscience and why
    • What you hope to gain from a work experience placement with the Institute of Neuroscience
  • Dates you would be available for a placement

Once you have this information, please send it to Laura Pereira by email on laura.pereira@ncl.ac.uk. If you have any queries in the meantime, please contact Laura by phone on 0191 222 8320.

Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme (Schools and Colleges):

Nuffield Foundation Science Bursaries offer up to 1000 bursaries a year, for students to work alongside practising scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. Projects take place during the summer holidays, giving students an insight into the world of scientific research and development.

Students in the first year of a post-16 science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) course are eligible to apply for a bursary of £80 per week to support them during their project. Placements are available across the UK, in universities, industry or research institutions (including the Institute of Neuroscience) and are organised through regional coordinators. The length of placements can vary, but is usually six weeks.

For more information please visit the Nuffield Foundation website or contact the Regional Coordinator for Newcastle.
